Background
Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI)/Médecins Sans Frontières provides medical assistance during natural and manmade disasters through establishment of healthcare centres, implementing medical programs for critical illnesses on its own or with partners, working for creating medical awareness and capacity building and carry out/sponsor research to provide strategic input on relevant medical treatment options in India.
DWBI offers assistance to people in need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.


GENERAL:
Location: Zokhawthar, Champhai (Mizoram)
Number of positions available: 1 (full-time position)
Availability: 12 months, with possible extension

• Salary: INR 27,960 gross/month (non-negotiable)

Main purpose of Post:
Prepare, provide and present health education sessions to the population/patients according to DWBI principles and values in order to promote health information through health measures, education and hygiene conditions as well as provide information about DWBI activities in order to facilitate access to healthcare for patients who are identified.
Functional and Hierarchical Lines:
The position is hierarchically and functionally answerable to Nursing Team Supervisor and Nurse Activity Manager respectively.


Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
• Prepare material and deliver health education sessions, messages and topics addressed to different populations regarding hygiene, various diseases, and prevention.
• Ensure all the patients and caretakers are well informed, according to protocols, about health-related issues and services provided.
• Monitor health situation and living conditions of the population by conducting nutritional screening, collecting information related to food security, checking vaccination status of children, looking actively for any defaulters in programs which require it, collect information on number of people arriving or leaving the community, births and deaths in the community, and other indicators as required.
• Identify people with medical problems, contact the medical team and report for immediate transfer if needed. They must inform to the line manager about any problem encountered (population, equipment, material…).
• Report to line manager all results of screening and visits on a regular basis.


Some other Accountabilities:
DWBI Clinic
• To conduct health awareness activities such as health service orientation, hand hygiene, personal hygiene, the use of bed nets and vector control, the importance of vaccination, the importance of breastfeeding, Sexual Violence and mental health care and improve health-seeking behaviours to the patients and or their attendants presenting to the DWBI clinic waiting area. This could be done through leaflets, pictures, and interaction with the patients and or their attendants, but always respecting local customs.
• Conduct patients exit satisfaction survey in the clinic according to the schedule of activities.
• Person recruited will be based in Zokhawthar and monitor the activities around the area.
• Carry out sensitization sessions through participatory teaching methods on various health-related topics.

Community:
• To conduct health awareness activities such as health service orientation (including Sexual Violence and mental health services), hand hygiene, personal hygiene, the use of bed nets and vector control, the importance of vaccination, the importance of breastfeeding, improve health-seeking behaviours in the community and refugee camps. This could be done through leaflets, pictures, and interaction with population, but always respecting local customs.
• Carry out sensitization sessions through participatory teaching methods on various health-related topics.
• In close collaboration with the project coordinator support, liaise between DWBI and community in regards of health-related and humanitarian needs in the community.
• Provide regular contact with community leaders and key people in the field to gather information on local context and practices that may impact/affect the activities and ensure DWBI’s acceptance.
• Support other health-related activities in the community and refugee camps such as health survey/screening, and health promotion activities.
• Carry out regular community surveillance on malaria, measles, community births and deaths, population movement in community and refugee camps.
• Check vaccination status of children of population and refer them to the subcentre, if needed.

Reporting:
• Provide daily health and contextual update to the Nursing Team Supervisor and the Nursing Activity Manager regarding their activities in the clinic and the community.
• Ensure maintain confidentiality regarding all information observed or registered.
• Report to nursing team supervisor all results of screening and visits on regular basis.
• Inform supervisor about any possible serious problem or complication during meetings with the population in and/or outside the clinic.
• Inform supervisor of any problems that might be linked their work as a Community Health Educator.
• Note that. The responsibilities mentioned above are not exhaustive and other tasks can be added in accordance with the needs of the project.


Requirements:
Education: • Literacy essential. An internal DWBI training on health messages will be necessary. A certain level of knowledge in medical/health or in education is preferable.
Experience: • Desirable working experience as a Community Health Worker or Community Health Educator.
Languages: • Mission language (English) and local language(Mizo) essential and ability to speak or understand Burmese will be an added advantage.
