Background
Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI)/Médecins Sans Frontières provides medical assistance during natural and manmade disasters through establishment of healthcare centres, implementing medical programs for critical illnesses on its own or with partners, working for creating medical awareness and capacity building and carry out/sponsor research to provide strategic input on relevant medical treatment options in India.
DWBI offers assistance to people in need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.

Location: Champhai (Mizoram)

Main purpose of Post:
Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.
Functional and Hierarchical Lines:
The position is hierarchically and functionally answerable to Nursing Activity Manager and Medical Doctor respectively.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:
•Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
•Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
•Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
•Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary.
•Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization.
•Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the identification of any emergency situation or deterioration.
•Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers, health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise. Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed.
•Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning, storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
•Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Following the user manual and protocols and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
•Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision, ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures.
Some other Accountabilities:
Main Duties and Care of Referral Nurse:
•Assist and monitor the flow of referrals from Champhai District Hospital and manage direct cross-border referrals to designated secondary care hospitals.
•Act as the first point of contact for patients crossing through the Zote border; coordinate with the District Hospital doctor and seek approval from the Zokhawthar (ZKT) MDs to register patients under services as per DWBI referral criteria.
•Receive patients arriving through other border points or PHCs, assist with admission, and provide daily follow-up, including support to attendants and translation when required.
•Ensure continuous follow-up throughout the patient’s stay, including admission procedures, investigations, treatments, ward care (including meals), and discharge.
•Accompany and guide patients and caretakers within the hospital to ensure they receive timely care.
•Closely monitor patient status and report immediately to NTS/ MDs/PMR/ NAM on new admissions, major investigations, ongoing procedures, complications, or any deterioration.
•Report immediately to Medical Doctor (MDs)/ NTS/NAM in the event of a patient’s death and facilitate respectful dead-body transport to the required destination, or settlements in India.
•Ensure patients understand discharge instructions, receive necessary medications, and have complete discharge papers with final diagnosis; Coordinate transport for their return.
•Coordinate with hospital administration, finance, laboratory, Pharmacy, blood bank, and Med-AIM Hospital, or other health facility to ensure timely services for all referred patients.
•Follow up on hospital invoices and facilitate the payment process in coordination with DWBI NTS/HR/Finance team and the hospital’s finance department.
•Maintain strict confidentiality of all patient information.
•Ensure that patient accommodation and food arrangements are properly managed.
•Ensure the referral logbook is updated daily/weekly with patient condition, planned procedures, and follow-up notes.
•Prepare daily/weekly and monthly referral reports and share with NTS/ (MDs).
•Participate in medical meetings (online and in person) whenever ask for it.
•Accompany unstable patients requiring medical assistance during referral to tertiary care or arrange appropriate escort support based on case requirements.
•Be based near Champhai District Hospital and remain available for 24/7 on-call duty (day/night) including attending patient phone calls.
•Remain flexible and willing to take on additional duties as required to support smooth patient’s management.
Requirements:
Education:
•Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma.
•Desirable bachelor’s in science of nursing.
Experience:
•Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO’s.
•Demonstrable experience in supervising and training others in a team setting
Languages:
•Local language essential (Mizo, Tedim, Burmese, Falam). Mission language desirable.
