Background
Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI)/Médecins Sans Frontières provides medical assistance during natural and manmade disasters through establishment of healthcare centres, implementing medical programs for critical illnesses on its own or with partners, working for creating medical awareness and capacity building and carry out/sponsor research to provide strategic input on relevant medical treatment options in India.
DWBI offers assistance to people in need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.


GENERAL:
Location: Zokhawthar, Champhai (Mizoram)
Number of positions available: 1 (full-time position)
Availability: 12 months, with possible extension
Starting date: ASAP

Benefits:
•Salary: INR 30,250 gross/month (non-negotiable)

Main purpose of Post:
Verbal interpretation, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (medical round, consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population.

Functional and Hierarchical Lines:
The position is hierarchically and functionally answerable to Project Medical Referrent (PMR) respectively.


Responsibilities / Accountabilities:
•Inform medical staff about important cultural nuances to consider during a meeting, medical consultation or interview with local people.
•Participate in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter.
•Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio calls or other telecom devices, when necessary.
•Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners.
•Translate DWBI internal / external documents into local language(s).
•Keep record of all translated documents.
•Look after all equipment provided, i.e. dictionaries or other books that belong to DWBI
•Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.


Some other Accountabilities:
•To translate from patients’ language to English, for the doctor and psychologist during the consultation in the clinic.
•To ensure not to misinterpret and to translate precisely the patient’s complaints, history, and concerns without any interruptions.
•To translate critical medical information precisely from English to the language best understood by the patients and ensure that they understand the diagnosis accurately with proper plan of management.
•To support the team in translation during referral especially if the patients are Burmese speaking.
•To accompany the staff in the camps or health facilities for translation when required.
•To translate the documents whenever required.
•To support staff with translation during training, meetings, and workshops.
•To take notes in non-English speaking meetings and present the minutes in the translated form when required.
•To keep all translations confidential
•To help with patient follow-up as necessary. Assist patients on the phone with follow-up phone calls and check-ins and contact patients to remind them of appointment times in case the doctor asks.
•To have adequate understanding of confidentiality and patient sensitivity with regard to SRH, Mental health and SGBV case transactions.
•To follow cultural sensitivity and keep translation not changing the meaning, but translate verbally in speaker mode.
•To have basic knowledge of common medical terms in Mizo, Burmese, Falam and Tedim.
•To remain flexible and help in the clinics and office work when required.


Requirements:
Education:
•Essential secondary education, university degree desirable, health knowledge advisable.
Experience:
•Not essential.
