Background
Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI)/Médecins Sans Frontières provides medical assistance during natural and manmade
disasters through establishment of healthcare centres, implementing medical programs for critical illnesses on its own or with
partners, working for creating medical awareness and capacity building and carry out/sponsor research to provide strategic
input on relevant medical treatment options in India.

DWBI offers assistance to people in need, irrespective of race, religion, gender or political affiliation.


GENERAL:
Location: Zokhawthar, Champhai (Mizoram)
Number of positions available: 1 (full-time position)
Availability: 12 months, with possible extension
Starting date: ASAP

Main purpose of Post:
Providing nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied in service
and universal hygiene standards/precautions, in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.
Functional and Hierarchical Lines:
The position is hierarchically and functionally answerable to Nursing Team Supervisor & Nursing Activities Manager
respectively.
Responsibilities/Accountabilities:


• Knowing, promoting, implementing and following up the universal hygiene standards/ precautions, bio-hazard prevention and
infection control, security rules and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises and ensuring high standards of hygiene
of his/her working environment. Respecting medical secrets and confidentiality at all times.
• Organizing and carrying out care and treatments according to medical prescriptions, and assisting during consultations, daily rounds
and other medical procedures. Participating in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary.
• Identifying Sexually Gender Based Violence victims and referring them to the medical team so they can receive the necessary
treatment. Knowing and is aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit
• Ensuring patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their
feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurse, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or
during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when
necessary
• Sending material to be sterilized and recuperates it from sterilization
• Carrying out admission, surveillance and follow-up of patients (i.e. assessment of the evolution of their state of health and the
identification of any emergency situation or deterioration
• Carrying and supervising administrative procedures and documents (fill in patient’s files, forms, consumptions, statistics, registers,
health files, etc.), ensuring an appropriate written/oral handover, and reporting any problematic situations and cases that may arise.
Participating in data collection and keeping doctors/supervisors informed .
• Participating in the department-related pharmacy and medical equipment control and maintenance (quality and its functioning,
storage conditions, follow-up of expired drugs inventories, stock takes of medicines and material at every team changeover ensuring
no material is taken out of nursing area/wards without prior authorisation, etc.)
• Perform cleaning and minor maintenance for biomedical equipment used. Fol-lowing the user manual and protocols and alert
supervisor in case of malfunctioning.
• Supervising and training nurse-aids, nutritional assistants, cleaners and other related staff under his/her supervision,
ensuring teamwork and adherence to all appropriate protocols and procedures.

Some other Accountabilities:


OPD
• Supervise triage in the waiting area, ensuring detection of priority/emergency cases. Triage walk-in patients who are unwell
and prioritize them accordingly.
• Provide emergency nursing care as necessary in the designated area, promptly informing the doctor of the patient’s condition.
• Admission, surveillance, and follow-up of patients, including assessing their health state evolution and identifying emergencies
or any deterioration.
• Conduct several rapid tests (e.g., para check, syphilis, RDT) when necessary.
• Ensure proper waste management, including the separation of different kinds of waste and the correct use of sharp boxes.

Emergency Room
• Assess and monitor severely ill patients and notify the doctor promptly.
• Assist the Medical Doctor in monitoring the vital signs of patients.
• Provide first aid, nursing care, observation of vital signs, and administer medication, including basic life.
• support.
• Consult with the Medical Doctor and Nurse Supervisor for any questions or problems.

Dressing and Sterilisation/ IPC
• Dresses injuries or burns using an aseptic technique according to protocol.
• Performs minor surgical procedures according to protocol if requested.
• Sterilizes medical equipment following the guidelines, in the DWBI Clinic Sterilization Room
• Understanding, promoting, implementing, and following universal hygiene standards/precautions, biohazard prevention,
infection control, security rules, and other protocols and procedures in the medical premises to ensure high standards of hygiene
in the working environment. Maintaining confidentiality and always respecting medical confidentiality.
• Support the Nurse Supervisor in implementing universal precautions and waste management in the clinic and during referral
activities.

ANC / PNC/SRH/SGBV
• Offers a complete follow-up of pregnant women (ANC & PNC) and mothers according to the protocols in use takes patient
history; makes a complete physical examination; ensures appropriate preventive treatment is given as well and offers curative
treatment if necessary.
• Makes sensibilization season of prevention: hygienic, food, breastfeeding, health of pregnant women and ANC follow-up.
• Offers follow-up of the newborn: checks weight and the condition of the umbilical cord; breastfeeding; measures appropriate
preventive treatment is given, according to the protocols in use.
• Detects complications related to pregnancy or to the postnatal period and adapts the approach as necessary.
• Fill in the relevant antenatal and postnatal files and registers.
• Identifying victims of Sexually Gender-Based Violence and referring them to the medical doctor for necessary treatment. Being
knowledgeable and aware of the importance and appropriate use of the Post Exposure Prophylaxis (PEP) Kit.
• Consult and make a handover with the midwives.
Nutrition
• Ensure triage of patients in waiting areas, detecting the priority acute cases, carrying out first aid care when necessary and
referring them to the doctor if necessary and ensuring all patients 6 months – 59 months have nutrition Screening (MUAC)
• Carry out all patient’s related tasks for admission, weighing and measuring the children, identifying the degree and types of
malnutrition, registering,) etc.
Referrals:
• Accompany/guide patients and caretakers referred to the referral hospital
• Follow up on the final diagnosis and ensure availability of prescribed medications.
• Report regularly, and when necessary, to the MAM/NAM/PMR regarding the status of referred patients or any problems.
• Ensure accommodation and food for the patient are well arranged and liaise with the administrative finance department for
related issues.
• Assure confidentiality for all referred patients.
• Follow up and request invoices from the hospital’s financial department, sending them to the project for payment.
• Ensure the patient is discharged with clear handwriting on the discharge paper, including diagnosis, treatment given, and follow
up instructions.
• Coordinate the patient’s journey back home after treatment.
• Ensure blood transfusion availability for referral patients as needed, following hospital policy.
• Collaborate with the hospital regarding the follow-up of potential emergency or outbreak events.
• Create short weekly and monthly activity reports for referral patients.
• Ensure the referral logbook is up to date on SharePoint daily/weekly and update the referral follow-up sheet for patients
referred from DWBI Clinic to another Health Facility.
• Update staff health and first aid kit for vehicles on a weekly/monthly basis.
• Participate in meetings at the base.
• Report any issues or concerns to the Nurse Team Supervisor.


Requirements:
Education:
• Essential recognized nurse degree/diploma.
• Desirable bachelor’s in science of nursing

Experience:
• Desirable 2 years of previous experience and previous experience in other NGO’s.

Languages:
• Mission and Mizo language essential.
