PROJECT LOCATION AND SUMMARY

Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) / Doctors Without Borders India (DWBI) is humanitarian medical aid organization working in more than 70 countries worldwide. Médecins Sans Frontiers is neutral, impartial, independent, and not linked to any political party or governmental body. Our teams provide emergency medical assistance to people in need, irrespective of their nationality, race or religion. In 1999 MSF was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize as recognition for its medical work in several continents.

Doctors without Borders India is set up a short term response in southern Mizoram state to assist the local communities with mobile medical clinics, mental health support, health promotion, water and sanitation support and NFI distributions. The response aims at supporting local populations as well as those who have been temporarily displaced to India following the conflict in Chin State, Myanmar.

Purpose of Post:

Verbal interpretation, in person or remotely, during daily medical activities (medical round, consultations, interviews, meetings, etc.) and written translations, from the mission language to local language(s) or vice versa, in order to ensure accurate, respectful, fluent and confidential communication between medical staff and local population.

Functional and Hierarchical Lines:

Hierarchically and functionallyaccountable to Mental Health Supervisor &Mental health Activity Manager.

Availability : 1 yearwith possible extension depending on the intervention.

Hierarchically and functionally accountable to Mental Health Supervisor &Mental health Activity Manager.

Accountabilities:

  • Offer face-to-face or phone-based interpretation for individual counseling sessions provided by counselor educators/psychologists for the displaced people from Myanmar settled in different camps of Mizoram.
  • Carry out visits to different camps, settlements, individual displaced families in the district to conduct interpretation with the Mental health team while performing different activities.
  • Assuring the translation between the counselor/psychologist and the beneficiary in his/her mother tongue by making the words of the medical team understandable to the beneficiary and vice versa.
  • Support the mental health team in creating culturally appropriate recreational activities and provide translations on the sessions.
  • Demonstrate positive behavior for the well-being of the beneficiaries by being patient and respectful while offering group psychosocial support sessions.
  • Guaranteeing confidentiality ,impartiality and neutrality.
  • Support children in learning about particular activities during group sessions that may be difficult for them to understand.
  • Support the team as an interpreter during trainings and work shops.
  • Providing interpreting in formal and informal meetings with MOH, camp leaders , other local authorities and stakeholders.
  • Translate medical or non medical documents to the local languages.
  • Keep files and other material in safe custody to preserve confidentiality.
  • Keep the line manager updated about job-related activities and/or any problem faced in the field/work station
  • Maintaining the work-related data and sharing the same with the line manager on time.
  • Perform Any other task linked to interpretation and translation upon supervisors request.

DWBI Section/Context Specific Accountabilities:

  • Inform medical staff about important cultural nuances to consider during a meeting, medical consultation or interview with local people.
  • Participate in staff trainings and meetings as an interpreter.
  • Provide face to face interpreting, as well as during telephone and radio calls or other telecom devices, when necessary.
  • Adapt communication to any circumstances, using appropriate language registry as well as diplomatic and courtesy manners.
  • Translate DWBI internal / external documents into local language(s).
  • Keep record of all translated documents.
  • Look after all equipment provided, i.e., dictionaries or other books that belong to DWBI.
  • Ensure confidentiality and medical secrecy.

Requirements:


Education : • Essential secondary education, university degree desirable, health knowledge advisable.

Experience: • Not essential

Languages :

  • Essential, bilingual in both mission language and local languages and/or dialects .
  • Essential to speak one or more of the languages from Myanmar like (Burmese, Mara, lyi, Matupi, Khumi, Bawm and etc…)
